What are some good ways to get started with birdwatching in the valley?

The best and most fun way is to go out with someone who is familiar with birds here in the valley. Flathead Audubon has a many field trips and you can also attend their monthly programs when they are up and running. There are programs on the web which are a good place to start. Some of the best ones are run by Cornell University. There is a program called feeder watch which will get you acquainted with the birds that come to your feeder. There are also excellent applications for your device that can help you. I like the Sibley application because it can limit your choices to the state that you are in and gives you the opportunity to compare two different species on your phone. Dan Casey suggests that you look carefully at where WHITE appears on the bird you are observing. Perhaps we should have a program on this at one of our Naturalist meeting when we can meet again.
